The
Death Of The USS Houston (1942)
(Heavy Cruiser and Flagship
of the Asiatic Fleet)
Two Volumes
DEATH
BECOMES THE GHOST
: THE GLORY
and THE SHAME
For three months into the
Pacific War, the American Asiatic Fleet fought with Allied Navies to hold the
Japanese expansion to the South. In the climactic Battle of The Java Sea, the
Allies ( Dutch, British, Australian and American) sacrificed their remaining
battle fleets in desperation. HMAS Perth and USS Houston survived this battle
only to be lost in a suicidal attack on a fresh Japanese Fleet in Sunda Strait
two days later. It was a glorious but horrific death for two great ships and
the end of the US Asiatic Fleet.
The carnage of battle ended and the carnage of inhuman slavery and deprivation began for those who
were fortunate enough to survive and become guests of the Japanese Army. In
one of the most shameful episodes of the World War, the survivors of the Houston,
the Perth and other Allied commands that fell into the hands of the Japanese,
became slave labor. The deprivation, beatings, murder, disease and exhaustive
slavery took a huge toll. It is a SHAMEFUL episode that must be told. In
their own words, the survivors of the USS Houston offer a heart rending tale
of battle at sea and of their harrowing existence for nearly four years as
POWs in Southeast Asia.
This is one of the most
incredible stories to come from WWII. Remember "The Bridge over The River
Kwai"? These men were there, building the “Railway of Death”. The video combines
footage of the modern Navy and photos of the period, with current interviews
from the survivors. This is a story exemplifies the pinnacle of
sacrifice.
The producers went to
sea to interview some of the survivors aboard the USS Rentz (FFG-48). The
USS Rentz (as described by some of the young sailors aboard her) was named
after "some dead guy". The ship carries the name of Captain Rentz, ( the Houston’s
chaplain), who gave up his life jacket to save a young sailor after their
ship plunged to the bottom weighted by tons of Japanese shells. A recent Dutch
movie, "De Slagge In De Javazee" (English subtitles) will make excellent additional
resource material. This film concentrates on the Battle of The Java Sea. Sailors
from the Dutch, British, Australian, American AND the Japanese Fleet are interviewed.
This film is also available
from Grade-A. Excellent resource books on the subject, some of which may only
be available at your library are: "The Ghost That Died at Sunda Straits",
"Prisoners of the Japanese", “The Bamboo Express” and “The Last Battle Station.
Less than three months after Pearl Harbor, an entire Allied fleet was completely
destroyed in the Java Sea. There were no battleships available to the Allies.
The American Carrier forces were not in place. It was a suicide mission. The
USS Houston was the last to go down, following soon after HMAS Perth.
These are MUST SEE videos
(and MUST READ BOOKS!) for students of naval history.

TIN CAN SAILORS
(in production ...
delayed release)
Interviews with some
of Americas most interesting veterans who have manned the most deadly ships of
the twentieth century. Destroyer sailors from the 1930's to the present are interviewed
with footage of tin can's at sea. The timber of these sailors is still strong
as they share their most memorable experiences.
The producer is
himself a "Tin Can Sailor", who served aboard a Destroyer Escort (now known
as Fast Frigates). The national organization of Tin Can Sailors opened its doors
to interviews for the sake of posterity. Many of the interviews are believabley
humerous, taken in the environment of State "Bull Sessions". Some stories as
touching and some are sad, but all are part of the character that develops in
the men of the "small ships".
Completion
indefinitely delayed.

Snowfall Serenade . . .
A Winter Wonderlude
A relaxing journey
through the snow covered coutrysides of northern New Jersey, this video will
mezmorize and pacify. Grade-A Productions videotaped just about every snowstorm
we had during the Winter of '95 (and we certainly had enough to choose from).
We took the most beautiful winter scenes and coupled them with mood setting
music to make this relaxation video therapeutic and enjoyable. This tape
has plenty of uses. For those hot summer months, it's the August version
of the Yule Log. For those environments closer to the equator, it's a
view into the wonders of winters weather. It can also be very useful for
nursing homes and hospitals.
